We are in some state of shock, concern, fear and disbelief after these last two and half months of isolation. The term "unprecedented" has been used millions of times to describe this pandemic. It seems that the worst is behind us as we are trying to get back to business.
Every business has been effected negatively and the recovery phase is underway. Social distancing and wearing masks are now commonplace. Our goal at Goldman Periodontics is to reassure the sense of security and confidence that you have always had in our office. Gloves, masks, high standards of sterilization procedures have always been in effect. However, we cannot avoid the economic "collateral damage" caused by this pandemic. As a capitalist society, yes there are companies that are benefiting and find it opportunistic that we are in this crisis. The cost of PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT(PPE) has skyrocketed due to supply and demand.
The CDC has fueled the "fear factor" of dentists, assistants, and hygienists. The recommendation of wearing a mask that costs $10 or more and needs a special fitting at about $100, disposable gowns, air purifiers,face shields, hand sanitizers to mention part of the list has significantly the cost of dental treatment. One dentist is out there advocating re-designing air and heating systems in every dental office!
Unfortunately, at Goldman Periodontics we are faced with the difficult and tough decision of having to charge a $10 PPE fee to minimize our cost of treating patients. Delta Dental of NJ has graciously allowed this fee for their customers. Other insurance companies have allowed this fee but made it the patient responsibility. We can not charge the insurance company more for a procedure because they have a fee schedule. Honestly, these fees have not been adjusted in over 10 years. As prices will eventually come down, we hope this is a temporary solution.
